If you are in the process of building, extending or completely refurbishing your
home, it is always much more cost-effective to get the basics such as heating and
insulation sorted before work starts in order to avoid potentially costly and disruptive
changes halfway through the project. Therefore the planning stage is the best time
to consider how you are going to minimise your property’s running costs and environmental
Expert Energy provides independent advice on low-carbon strategies -we do not accept
commission for referrals, nor do we sell solutions ourselves, therefore you can trust
our recommendations to be completely unbiased.
Expert Energy’s Andy Smale is a physicist by training. As well as running Expert
Energy, Andy has many years’ experience working in a consultant role for local charity
Winchester Action On Climate Change, and is regularly invited to appear as an energy
advisor on BBC Radio Solent. Please see Andy’s LinkedIn profile for more details
on his background experience and qualifications.
We will meet with you to discuss your objectives and review your project plans, outlining
appropriate solutions on the following aspects of energy consumption:
Heating and hot water generation, distribution and control
Insulation, airtightness and ventilation strategies
Energy-efficient lighting solutions
Appliances and other electrical issues
Opportunities for renewable/low-carbon energy generation
Grants and financial incentives available to help fund your work
Following the meeting we will write up our recommendations in a detailed and personalised
report, including (where applicable) indicative capital costs and energy/cost savings
compared between alternative solutions.
Expert Energy Guides
We spend a considerable amount of time producing and updating our Expert Energy Guides
- these are a series of detailed PDF guides (totalling 130 pages) to particular subjects
relating to our most common recommendations, for example upgrading your boiler or
installing solar thermal systems. We send the relevant guides to you separately
in order that we can provide you with in-depth information on particular aspects
of our recommendations without cluttering up the main report.
We realise that there may be questions which occur to you after the consultation
has taken place, or issues you would like to clarify. You have the opportunity to
ask any follow-up questions you have relating directly to the report for up to 12
Consultation prices will depend on the size of the property, and on how far we have
to travel from our Hampshire offices. For projects that do not involve a new-build
or whole-house refurbishment we usually suggest the home energy survey is a more
appropriate package for you. If you wish to keep the costs down we can also offer
remote consultations with the help of plans, photos etc.
